Bunbury scores Hockeyroos fixtures

Bunbury will host two international hockey matches in February, when Australia take to the pitch against Great Britain at the Bunbury Hockey Stadium.

South West MLC Colin Holt made the announcement on behalf of Sport Minister Mia Davies earlier today at the Bunbury Hockey Stadium.

The State Government will provide $35,000 worth of funding through the Country Sport Enrichment Scheme, which will fund two tests between the Australian women’s hockey team, the Hockeyroos, and Great Britian, in Bunbury.

Exact dates for the games are yet to be released.

Mr Holt said it was a great coup for the Bunbury and Districts Hockey Association.

“We know in the bush in WA we can put on a good show,” he said.

“Hockey is a great sport and a very popular sport here in Bunbury.

“I would be encouraging everyone to come down and watch it.”

Mr Holt said the South West was a great location to host professional sport.

“I think we have a great deal to offer in WA for professional sporting teams,” he said.

Bunbury Hockey Stadium president Barry Scott said the announcement of the match was a big deal for hockey in the region.

“We hope it encourages kids and young people to come through and play the sport,” he said.

Mr Scott said the money would help set up grandstands and a big screen.

He said the ideal situation would see a grandstand built permanently at the stadium.
