Bunbury traders can open their shops for as long as they like – even 24 hours – from tomorrow, following an announcement from the State Government.

Commerce Minister Michael Mischin today announced he had agreed to allow deregulated trading hours in the City of Bunbury.

He accepted an application made by Bunbury City Council in February, which was supported by the Bunbury Chamber of Commerce and Industries.

Mr Mischin said the trading hours would match those already operating in the Shire of Dardanup.

“While the changes give all Bunbury retail shops the choice of opening for extended periods during the week and on Sundays and public holidays, there is no obligation for retailers to open for longer hours if they do not wish to do so,” Mr Mischin said in a statement.

“Retailers can make a business decision on whether or not it is profitable to trade for longer hours.

“Importantly, the reforms provide retailers with more choice on when they can trade.”

Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said the time was right for trading hours to be expanded.

“I am delighted with the announcement, which is the result of the City and Bunbury’s business community having a very strong working relationship, and I applaud the efforts of all involved in achieving this result,” Mr Brennan said.

Shops can open every day except Christmas Day, Anzac Day and Good Friday.
