Calling Worsley families ...

South Western Times

The Friends of Worsley have commissioned Collie author John Bird to write a history of the Worsley timber mill area.

The Worsley area started to boom between 1898-1910 with local jarrah being supplied to most parts of the world.

Worsley had some of the bigger timber mills in Western Australia with the first, the Collie Mill, supplying much of the timber to build the Bunbury Jetty.

Mr Bird and a team of Friends of Worsley members are working to archive and retrieve information on the history of Worsley.

The project is expected to take up to 18 months of collating and retrieving information and Mr Bird would like people who have information to come forward.

‘‘I am very keen to hear from folks whose families lived at Worsley, Fernbrook or in that area,’’ he said.

Margaret White, whose father worked in the area and who grew up in a tent at Wellington Dam, said she would like anyone who grew up in the area or worked on any of the projects to come forward.

‘‘We hope that more people could come forward especially the people who worked on the railway,’’ she said.
