Commerce Minister Michael Mischin has approved extended trading hours in the Shire of Capel.

Capel Shire Council asked Mr Mischin to adjust seven-day trading hours to 8am-9pm, except for on Christmas Day and Good Friday, and 1pm-9pm on Anzac Day.

Mr Mischin said the Retail Trading Hours Act 1987 allowed him to make an exemption for general retailers in the shire to open later on weeknights and Sunday.

"While the changes give all Capel retail shops the choice of opening for extended periods during the week and on Sundays and public holidays, there is no obligation for retailers to open for longer hours if they do not wish to do so," he said.

Shire president Murray Scott said the extension was a positive move but it was up to individual businesses to decide what times they wanted to be open.
