Year 7 students at the school were visited by CarbonKids, a CSIRO schools initiative teaching students about the importance of sustainable living through environmentally friendly practices at school and at home.

CSIRO’s national CarbonKids coordinator Angela Colliver hosted a workshop at the school to educate students and teachers about the importance of reducing carbon emissions and the new approaches farmers would be required to take to manage climate-related risks.

‘‘The curriculum material enables the students to use an enquiry-based teaching and learning approach and source information but then unpack it and form their own conclusion,’’ she said.

Year 7 student Holly Fandry said she learned humans had a negative impact on the earth but could act to reduce the size of that impact.

‘‘You can make sure to turn things off at the wall because we are using too much energy on standby,’’ she said.

Students at the school are also learning from a hands-on approach to reducing carbon emissions, with the school making its own bio-diesel.

The fuel is used to run a generator which powers lights in their cafe.
