CATS bring Tom Sawyer to stage

Cats and Tom Sawyer collided in a musical treat at Bunbury Catholic College hall on Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Students from the Creative, Artistic and Talented Students (CATS) program at Adam Road Primary School presented a musical adaptation of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, demonstrating their skills in music, drama and art.

Led by Jacob Ashton as Tom Sawyer and and Molly Brooks as Becky Thatcher, 17 students performed musical numbers to big crowds on both nights.

CATS m u sic teac he r Da nae Cornford said the production was a good way for the students to show off their progress in the program.

‘‘It brings all the kids from the different CATS areas together, and has them working together and performing to a crowd,’’ she said.

‘‘It builds their confidence.’’

In the lead up to the event, the students also had to work together to sell tickets and organise and paint sets.

Last year, CATS presented Peter Pan as their musical.

‘‘It was the principal’s idea to show Tom Sawyer, he did it in his primary school days,’’ Ms Cornford said.

The CATS program has been running at Adam Road Primary School for a number of years, and also used to incorporate dance.

‘‘The production is a good way for the school to showcase the CATS program to the general public and get them interested,’’ Ms Cornford said.

CATS drama teacher Amy O’Grady said the students’ performance skills had strengthened since last year.

‘‘I’m extremely proud of the students — they’ve gone above and beyond what they did for Peter Pan,’’ she said.
