Cav's crazy crash rescue

TARI JEFFERSSouth Western Times

Cav Cossar describes pulling the driver out of a car that crashed into the back of an East Bunbury home on Saturday as the craziest night of his life.

“It was the weirdest thing and I had to keep reminding myself it’d happened,” he said.

Risking his own life in a potentially dangerous situation, the 16- year-old College Grove resident recalls the smell of gas and the noise of a revving engine when he decided to check on the driver of the Mercedes sedan.

Cav was at his friend’s house next door on Saturday night when he heard a “huge crash” at about 8.30pm.

He scaled the fence separating his friend’s house from the scene of the crash and ran to check on the driver.

“The car was still revving so I turned off the ignition and pulled the driver out,” he said.

“I didn’t want to move the driver too far in case of injuries but I could smell gas.”

Cav said he did not think about what he was getting himself into before he jumped the fence.

“I remember thinking I had to help the person in the car,” he said.

“The car was wedged into the back of the house and you could see where it had come from.

“The backyard looked like it’d been knocked over and was leaning sideways.”

Cav — who landed in a rose bush when he jumped the fence — said he thought it was better he helped, rather than standing by watching.

“I heard voices out the front of the house and torches from across the park behind the house,” he said.

“I remember wondering why they weren’t coming to help me when I shouted out to them.”

Cav also looked after the driver’s dog while the police and firefighters attended the scene.

“I didn’t see the dog when I first checked to see if there was anyone else in the car because I couldn’t see it in the dark,” he said.

“If I could do anything differently, I would have charged my phone because it was flat and I couldn’t call the police.”
