Centre celebrates 25 years of discovery

South Western Times

The Dolphin Discovery Centre turns 25 this year and is celebrating with the Dolphin City Festival later this month.

An open day on October 18 and a market day on October 19 will herald the start of the dolphin swim season.

Dolphin Discovery Centre general manager David Kerr said the weekend of fun would include talks about the centre's 25 years and a photo display of its history.

The open day would also include kids' fishing clinics from the beach, face painting and bouncy castles.

"Saturday is our traditional open day and we'll recognise the history of the centre," Mr Kerr said.

"Former Bunbury Mayor David Smith will talk about his mother Evelyn Smith and how she used to feed the dolphins near the Parade Hotel.

"Her nickname was Louie and that’s why our dolphin mascot is named Louie."

The open day will also include an educational aspect with displays by South West Catchment Council, Newton Moore Senior High School, Cooinda Primary School and Murdoch University researchers based at the Dolphin Discovery Centre.

Mr Kerr said visitors could meet rescued wildlife and book one of the discounted Dolphin Eco Cruises.

Bunbury City Band, Australind Band, indigenous dancers and Sing Australia will provide entertainment.

The market day will raise money for the centre's turtle rehabilitation program.
