Cheeky tops fight night

A sensational second round knock-out and a ripper little cameo by top-liner Nathanial May bracketed a great night of professional fighting at the Eaton Recreation Centre on Saturday night.

Stokesy’s Hit Pit Promotions was full of action in and out of the ring with South West auctioneer and legend Tiny Holly raising thousands of dollars selling off memorabilia to more than a thousand fans who packed the main hall.

The first fight set the scene with Sala Odaj finishing off Daniel Rogers in their four-round preliminary bout with a sweet left hook on the button at the end of a stinging attack midway through the second.

Then followed local debutante “Danger” Dan McGlashan – the second pro fighter to come out of the Denning Boxing Gym stable – stopping his opponent, Kyle Dean in the first round.

Also filling in between the first KO and the “Cheeky” May headliner were a couple of mixed martial arts bouts and a solid eight-rounder between ABO Asia Pacific middleweight champion and WA light-heavyweight title holder Luke Sharp and lanky Queenslander Steve Ma.

Sharp appeared to shade his opponent throughout their eight round middleweight contest, finishing with a furious flurry of punches to seal the deal but the judges scored the fight in favour of Ma.

Then came the much anticipated May eight rounder with the ever-improving Bunbury boxer too good for his South Korean opponent.

May’s fast hands and darting straight sorties were too much for Hwi Jong Kim who was expected to test the classy Pete Stokes charge after pushing former WBC Intercontinental super-featherweight champ Matt Garlett in Bunbury two years ago.

However, with May warming to his task, Kim hit the canvas for the first time in his red corner and a minute later in a neutral corner before the coup de gras came in front of the officials’ table courtesy of a concerted two-fisted combination after May cornered the Korean in the third.
