The CinefestOZ French and Australian film festival will open with a dark twist in Bunbury next Wednesday, as William Barrett and Sons funeral directors open their doors for the festival’s ‘black carpet’ event.

The night of black comedy will feature four short films, including 2014 WA Screen Awards winning film The Fan. Funeral director Adrian Barrett said it was important for the company to be a part of the community in a positive way.

“Part of being a funeral directory is that the community looks to us during difficult and bad times, ” he said.

“It is nice to be a part of the community in good times as well and it helps people to feel comfortable in that they know it is not a stranger looking after them in those difficult times.”

Mr Barrett said the chapel was actually quite well suited for a film screening.

“I just think its something we want to be able to support for people in the community to attend and do something different, ” he said.

The ABC’s Meghan Woods and Film and Television Institute chief executive officer Paul Bodlovich will host the event.

Mr Bodlovich said the film festival was a unique opportunity for film fans to interact with filmmakers.

“CinefestOZ is a really important event for the local screen community in WA, ” he said.

“It is a really long term strategy for helping people to have an audience at home before they even have to look elsewhere, which is really important.”
