William Barrett and Sons is used to dealing with funerals but it last week reached the sponsorship equivalent of a silver wedding anniversary.

The Bunbury funeral director has sponsored the bowls section of the Donnybrook Country Club for 25 years and proprietor Errol Barrett believes supporting such clubs has a major impact on the region.

“Clubs in towns like Donnybrook are an important part of the fabric of that community,” Mr Barrett said.

“In these days and times, it is harder for clubs to get sponsorship but I believe it is part of our community involvement.

“I think it is important companies contribute to the wellbeing of clubs in the community, otherwise the fabric of the community breaks down.”

The relationship began 25 years ago when club stalwart Fred Morgan approached Mr Barrett about possible sponsorship.

“I said ‘Fred, why wouldn’t we? We help people out in sad times so why not help in happy times as well?’,” Mr Barrett said.

Mr Barrett took part in the annual William Barrett and Sons-sponsored bowls day at the club last Wednesday and also presented trophies.

Club president Joe Betti described the day as “very popular” with bowlers travelling from as far as Augusta, Pemberton and Mandurah to play.

There were 28 teams of four involved, which he said was the maximum that could take part.
