Collie rolls out plan to be a mountain bike mecca

Mountain biking is one of the world’s fastest growing sport and recreational activities, according to Collie Shire Council chief executive officer David Blurton who is excited to further establish the town as a place to experience the sport.

The council received $107,500 of Royalties for Regions funding to develop a Town Site Mountain Bike Trail, close to the CBD, which will be accessible from either Soldiers or Lions Park.

The new trail means bike riders will not need to cross major roads or rail crossings and will link-up with existing and planned trails in the area.

“This would allow cyclists to travel to Collie and then rejoin the Munda Biddi and Mount Lennard trails without back track-ing along a previously trav-ersed route,” Mr Blurton said.

“It is important to build on the work and provide assets that will encourage people to want to live, visit and invest in Collie.”

Collie Mountain Bike Club committee member John Wallace said the trail would boost tourism because big events could be held.

“Once built there won’t be a trail like it anywhere else in WA,” he said.

“We will be able to hold 12 and 24 hour events which are popular in other parts of the world and will have the scope to hold big cross country riding events.”
