Comic theatre’s bold vision
Where can you find saucy dancers, fresh-faced boy bands, incomprehensible love ballads and terrible folk music all in the one spot— where else but Eurovision?
The musical entertainment juggernaut that is the Eurovision Song Contest is something that can only be enjoyed once a year, via the television set— until now.
Bunbury Eurotrash lovers will be able to enjoy all the glitz and glamour of the song contest, without the hefty airline fees, when the Bunbury Musical Comedy Group, presents Eurobeat later this month.
Based on the book by Craig Christie, Eurobeat is a singing and dancing musical that features everything great about the world’s most famous talent contest.
‘‘It’s about celebrating Eurovision in all its trashy glory,’’ director Michelle Durrant said.
‘‘Musical acts, outlandish costumes and crazy personalities — it’s all there.’’
And just like the real thing, the audience gets to vote on the winner.
‘‘The audience gets to vote during intermission on who they wish to see perform in the finale,’’ she said.
‘‘We even cross ‘live’ to Europe.’’
The show includes song and dance numbers, outrageous costumes and is fully choreographed.
‘‘Teaching grown men how to dance— it’s been the longest three months of my life,’’ laughed Durrant.
Eurobeat was first performed around 10 years ago and enjoys a bit of a cult following.
It has been seen on stages across the world including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where it was widely popular among comedy lovers.
Always wanted to check out the theatre but been apprehensive?
The folks at the Bunbury Musical Comedy Group are insist Eurobeat is perfect for newcomers to live shows— because only a stone-cold heart could deny the infectiously loveable trash and glamour that is Eurovision.
The production is modern and fun and world’s away from traditional plays.
‘‘It’s about bringing theatre to the community,’’ Durrant said.
‘‘Eurobeat is a great introduction tomusical comedy.’’
Eurobeat, thanks to the Bunbury Musical Comedy Group and Act Belong Commit, will be performed at the New Lyric Theatre over two weekends from October 19.
Tickets are available from BREC ticketing.
