Constable cares about Safety in Schools Week

South Western Times

Students at Bunbury Primary School were thrilled to host a visit from Bunbury police as part of 2011 Safety in Schools Week.

Running until tomorrow, the annual event reminds school communities to always consider the importance of keeping children safe.

The event offers all West Australian injury prevention agencies the opportunity to unite and present their messages, resources and curriculum-based activities to schools.

The collaborative nature of the event also helps schools develop partnerships with health agencies, public health units and other organisations.

Associate principal Franca Dillon said educating and reinforcing the importance of safety to students and the role police and emergency services played in ensuring safety in the community was vital.

‘‘National Safety Week is an opportunity to remind everyone about the importance of building a safe community,’’ she said.

Visiting Bunbury Primary School to teach students about the importance of building a safe community, Sgt Gerard Murphy and Const. Doug Baker delighted students by offering a hands-on approach.

Exploring a squad car and motorcycle under watchful eyes, Allira Simpson, 5, said she had fun, but the siren was ‘‘a bit noisy’’.
