Primary school students joined forces to show how committed they were to being good listeners and helping their peers.

Cooinda Primary School reinforced its Act-Belong-Commit message by dedicating a day to reminding its students the importance of caring for one another.

In the lead up to R U OK? Day on September 8, the school hosted an assembly where students performed a poem that explained what the day meant to them. It was also used to announce a plan to introduce a “conversation corner”.

The space will offer students a quiet place to have meaningful conversations.

They will also be able to write positive messages for their peers on the blackboards.

Principal Anne Fletcher said the space provided the platform for students to have discussions which would give them an opportunity to help each other with “life’s ups and downs”.

“Having good social networks and people to talk things over with is important for mental health and wellbeing,” she said.

She said the school encouraged both students and staff to be proactive about mental health.
