Crisis for SW junior football

Mitchell Woodcock, SOUTH WESTERN TIMESSouth Western Times

Carey Park Junior Football Club coordinator Darren Kenny said the club’s decision was made because it was best for the junior players.

“In the best interests of the children playing football in competitive, full teams, we had to merge with Marist,” he said.

“So for 2015 we have dissolved the junior teams and we are taking the kids to Marist.”

Kenny hopes the club will be re-established next year.

“There will be talks in June or July and if there is enough interest then it (re-establishment) will be the case,” he said.

South West Football League president Kevin Lynn said the league executive was concerned about the loss of the junior club and its likely impact on the future of senior teams.

“We are worried in the long term that their feeder system for colts is in jeopardy and therefore their whole feeder system is in jeopardy,” he said.

“We hope they can find a way to get a junior system.”

Carey Park Football Club secretary Simone Nani said the committee would address the issue at its next meeting and try to ensure the longevity of the club.

South West Region Football Development Council chairman Mark Blakely said the loss of the junior teams could have serious ramifications for the future.

“We’re working in conjunction with the club to get their juniors back as quick as possible,” he said.

“It’s not good for football in general and it is not good for the SWFL.”

Kenny said there needed to be an investigation into why children were not playing junior football.

“There has to be some serious questions asked,” he said.

“Any boys who haven’t yet come to Marist are welcome to join on Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Bunbury Catholic College or contact Carey Park.”

The South West Football League met last night to decide what action to take over the issue.
