Cruisers sail home to Koombana Bay

David Clifton’s Eftel claimed line honours in the A Division cruisers but it was second-placed Brian Allen’s Flight II that took the day’s prize on corrected time to highlight an exciting day of racing at the Koombana Bay Sailing Club on Saturday.

The A Division cruisers headed out along the Back Beach and made a great spectacle heading back into the bay under spinnaker, with Mick Peel’s Secret Men’s Business rounding out the top three.

The B Division cruisers were headed by Trevor Smith who piloted the family S80 class yacht Still Dreamin into first place on handicap.

Gil Sowden returned to the bay on Empty Pockets for Saturday’s JaM race (Jib and Main only) and tussled with Warren Cowell in Arkeeta but eventually took both line honours and the handicap result.

In Division 4 for trailerable yachts, Phil Slee steered The Veteran to a line honours win, however Mark Donovan in Karma was able to sneak inside on handicap to take the day’s trophy. A good fleet of catamarans hit the water with Anthony Talbot steering his 5.8 Nacra class to line honours but Gary Gornall claiming the handicap win.

In Mixed Dinghies, Noelene Snelling sailed a flawless race to edge out 14-year-old young gun Kaiella Taylor with Queen of Hearts claiming both line honours and the handicap win.

Luke Dobrich dominated the Open BIC class, the 13-year-old talent winning three of the afternoon’s four races with 11-year-old Will Drew claiming victory in the fourth.

On Sunday, the club’s next wave of junior sailors took to the water in the Mudlark program.

Six eager youngsters took their first solo sail along the club beach under the watchful eye of club trainers.

Anyone with young children aged six to 11 is welcome to visit the Koombana Bay Sailing Club on Sunday afternoons from 2pm to have a look at the new junior training program.
