Dad delivers baby in carpark

It is not every day that a first-time dad gets to deliver his baby boy and even less often does this happen in the hospital carpark.

But for Dalyellup man Chad Becker that’s exactly what he did at 1am on May 19—when his son Jack was born.

The family were asleep at home when Chad’s wife Danielle woke with contractions and then her waters broke.

Within 10 minutes Chad had driven her to hospital and while Danielle tried to get out of the car he ran to get a doctor and the nurses.

‘‘After I’d managed to get out of the car it started happening,’’ Danielle said.

After Chad delivered baby Jack the medical staff ran out, cut the umbilical cord and put Danielle in a wheelchair to bring her inside.

‘‘I didn’t mind not cutting the cord, delivering him was good enough,’’ Chad said.

The birth of the baby was not the only milestone of the night with Chad overcoming his fear of holding small babies.

‘‘I have never held a baby younger than five months-old,’’ he said.

‘‘But I didn’t have time to think about that, I didn’t even realise what was happening.’’

Danielle and Jack have had no complications since the birth and are both healthy.

‘‘Even though it was quite an experience to deliver my own baby, he was the easier,’’ she said.

Jack is now almost two weeks old and is a new brother to Danielle’s children Bree, 14, and Josh, 9.

Danielle said her children had been thrilled to tell the unusual story at school.

‘‘Josh proudly tells people his new brother arrived in a carpark,’’ she said.
