Deja Brew: Froth Brewery’s Victoria Street site to honour former pub Captain Bunbury with ‘thirst quencher’

The brains behind Bunbury’s new CBD brewery have found a crafty way to honour the rich history of the site they are building their massive pub on. Froth Craft Brewery, which made a name for itself with a hugely popular brewery in Exmouth in the State’s north, is just months away from opening its Bunbrewery — continuing a string of fresh new offerings at the northern end of Victoria Street. And the history of its newest location — on the corner of Carey and Victoria streets — will be recognised with a new beer, dedicated to one of Bunbury’s first pubs, the Captain Bunbury. The site has also been known as The Reef Hotel, Three Monkeys nightclub and Gordons in previous incarnations, before the heritage-listed building was gutted by fire in 2016. Froth owner Pete Firth said the first batch of Captain Bunbury Lager has just been brewed at its Exmouth brewery. “We will be launching a lager which attributes its name to a previous venue,” he said. “The site we’re on has a whole lot of pub and hospitality history at 12 Victoria Street and we wanted to pay homage to that. “It will be a lager that is a thirst-quencher and hopefully it will be welcomed by the masses.” The brewery’s fit-out is about to begin, while the first test batches could be less than two months ago, ahead of an expected opening sometime in June. “We are at the exciting pointy end of it all which people around town have noticed — it is all going up pretty quickly,” Mr Firth said. “The install of the brewery goes in next month and we will hopefully be doing test batches by mid-April. “We are trying to provide something that isn’t there that there is a massive demand for.”
