South West motorists who rely on diesel have reason to be happy, with the average price of the fuel dipping below Perth’s prices since June.

Two Collie stations were also offering the State’s cheapest diesel yesterday at 107.9cpl, which is more than 10cpl below Bunbury’s average.

Last week’s average Bunbury diesel price of 118.3cpl was about three cents per litre cheaper than the Perth equivalent.

This period is the first time Bunbury diesel users have had cheaper average prices than metropolitan drivers since February 2015.

FuelWatch manager Lynne Gould said there were two main reasons why Bunbury drivers could access diesel cheaper than Perth but not unleaded petrol.

“Diesel is much more competitive in the regions because of volume,” Ms Gould said.

“There tends to be a lot more diesel sold in the regions with trucks.

“There is also no weekly price cycle for diesel in Perth because it is a far less competitive market than unleaded.”

Despite their overall average being higher, some individual sites in Perth are still cheaper.

Yesterday, for example, more than 50 Perth stations were cheaper than Bunbury’s lowest price of 116.9cpl, with the lowest metropolitan price being 109cpl.

None of these was cheaper though than the Coles Express and Gull stations in Collie selling diesel for 107.9cpl.

Weekly price charts for the past 18 months show Bunbury’s average diesel price decreased consistently for about a year, going from almost 140cpl in July 2015 to its lowest point of about 113cpl this April.

The biggest gap between Bunbury and Perth prices during that period was in February when the metropolitan average was more than 6.5cpl cheaper.
