Dominant display by Panthers and Lions give them first wins

A nine goal run to Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault from midway through the third quarter gave the Lions a 39 point win at Brunswick Oval against the Harvey Bulls last night.

The Lions kicked five goals to none in the last quarter thanks to a dominant display by Anzac Day medallist Kristin Thornton to win 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57).

Thornton (two goals) was dominant throughout the game, working hard through the centre to provide drive inside 50 for the Lions.

A tight first half had both sides trading goals and when the Bulls kicked three quick majors after half-time it seemed the game would go the way of the visitors.

But the Lions kicked up their run and dominated the next quarter and a half to run away with the Western Cerllars Cup in emphatic fashion.

Meanwhile, at Kelly Park, Carey Park proved too strong for a young Augusta-Margaret River side to win by 64 points.

James Wallam kicked six goals and was well supported by midfielders Keiren King and James Hawksley (three goals) on their way to a dominant 16.18 (114) to 7.8 (50) victory.

Much like the game up the South West Highway, the first half was tight, but the Panthers began to move the ball better in the second half to break clear of a fighting Hawks outfit.

The result gives the Panthers their first win of the season and sets them up for Sunday’s clash against the Eaton Boomers.
