Donnybrook monument a community triumph

Usman Azad, SOUTH WESTERN TIMESSouth Western Times

Donnybrook's community spirit and tenacity has delivered a magnificent monument to remember soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The war memorial on South Western Highway could only be completed with generous contributions - including Donnybrook stone from a mining company, pavers from another business and the time of Balingup Shire Council employees to maintain the lawn and gardens.

Saturday's re-dedication of the memorial, attended by about 60 people including Returned and Services League WA president Graham Edwards and Forrest MHR Nola Marino, would not have happened without the donations and a $42,500 Lotterywest grant.

RSL Donnybrook sub-branch president Ric Evans praised everyone involved, including his members and Vietnam War veterans Geoff Box and Gerry Loveridge.

"It is great these people donated their time and services," he said.

"They went over and above to help us get the memorial done."

The memorial commemorates 79 people from Donnybrook who died in World War I and World War II.

But the memorial wall, which surrounds the Cenotaph, will note Australia's involvement in other wars.

Mr Edwards said the Donnybrook RSL worked hard to get the memorial completed by Anzac Day.

"When you see the list of supporters that Ric and his sub-branch members have had - from the local authority to a whole range of local groups, businesses and Lotterywest - it is a wonderful result.

"It reflects the community's honour and respect for those who lost their lives in the service of our nation."

Mr Edwards said memorials kept the stories "alive" for the younger generation.

"If you let the memories of those who have paid the supreme sacrifice die, then you let the stories go," he said.
