Don't end up like this at Christmas!
Nothing sends a message of caution quite like a written off car — the twisted metal, shattered glass and the concave impact from a tree trunk.
Police are hoping the aftermath of a crash on a South West road will send such a message.
The wrecked vehicle outside Donnybrook Police Station is due to be replaced this week, but the message will remain.
The concept of an authentic crashed car hoisted on a trailer has been around for years and is designed to be visually shocking, according to Donnybrook police officer-in-charge Sgt Ryan Van Der Heide.
“It’s a stark, visual reminder and brings to the forefront of people’s minds what can happen on the road,” Sgt Van Der Heide said.
In the lead-up to Christmas, Sgt Van Der Heide is asking drivers to be vigilant and take care on roads.
“We’ll be out and about on Christmas Day and we hope for the best, but plan for the worst,” he said.
“Country roads bring with them different surroundings, including country traffic.
“People need to be alert and drive safely.”
The crushed Ford Falcon located on one of Donnybrook’s busiest intersections is the result of a single-vehicle crash into a tree near Manjimup — fortunately not with fatal consequences.
Sgt Van Der Heide said the car was effective, with about 6500 vehicles passing it every day.
“A lot of people stop and have a good look — it’s a really good opportunity for people to be reminded,” he said.
“Any tool we have at our disposal that brings to the focus that driving is dangerous is good — not just for drivers but passengers too.”
