Drama class for ‘future stars’
Budding actors from Australind to Manjimup attended this week’s National Institute of Dramatic Art course at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School.
The five-day performing arts course was designed to extend and develop creative skills for 12 to 17-yearolds and provide insights into careers in the arts and entertainment industries.
Tutor Emily-Rose Brennan, who first attended a NIDA course at age 14, said all the students had a shown a positive attitude and willingness to learn.
‘‘Everyone has been so enthusiastic,’’ Ms Brennan said.
‘‘I think this is a great way to start.
‘‘I did a NIDA course when I was their age with some friends from high school and it set me up because five years later I was at the school.’’
Ms Brennan has been teaching the class a variety of performing skills, from general voice and improvisation skills to scene work and character role plays.
She said the next Sam Worthington could be unearthed during one of NIDA’s drama courses, with plenty of talented youngsters attending.
‘‘I couldn’t single anyone out at the moment but no doubt there is a future star in here,’’ Ms Brennan said.
‘‘They are all really professional and have a passion for performing which is probably the most important thing at their age.’’
Head of NIDA, Mark Gaal, said the courses developed specific talents, built confidence and extended children’s communication skills.
