Driver finds Jesus for big break
Bunbury's Matt Trawinski is a step closer to realising his motorsport dreams after catching the eye of one of Australia’s top drivers.
Trawinski got his first big break in the sport earlier this month when invited to drive at Sydney’s Wakefield Park Raceway by Andrew Fisher, a veteran of the Auto One V8 Ute Series and pilot of the Jesus Racing team.
Trawinski, 16, piloted the Jesus Racing ute under Fisher’s guidance in a pre-season test day.
The young gun grew up in Bunbury but moved to the Gold Coast last year with his family to pursue a career in motorsport.
He described the relocation as a “big decision”.
“It was something I felt had to be done so I could move to the next level, ” Trawinski said.
He began racing go-karts aged 10 and has never looked back.
“It doesn’t really run in my family. One day I begged Dad to take me to the racing and I just fell in love with it, ” Trawinski said.
“I begged Dad to get me a go-kart and started racing. Now I’m making my progression into racing cars and if all goes to plan it should be an exciting year ahead.”
Trawinski started the drive well and was quick to navigate the nuances of the track.
As the mercury soared close to 40 degrees he had to adapt, keeping an eye on the engine temperature and ensure he drank enough water.
“The utes can be a challenge to drive and are very different to what they (young people) are used to driving, ” Fisher said.
Trawinski’s next pre-season test day will be on the Gold Coast on February 27.
