Eaton's historic flag triumph

RILEY STUARTSouth Western Times

After four quarters of dour congested football, and 56 years of pain, the SWFL flag is Eaton’s for the first time.

It was not the Boomers’ most glamorous victory, but Sunday’s gritty 24-point triumph over the Collie Eagles was certainly the most important in the club’s history.

A dominant on-ball performance set up the 9.13 (67) to 6.7 (43) win at Hands Oval.

Eaton laid the foundations for its triumph with a dominant opening term and led by 22 points at the first change.

The Boomers’ engine room simply had too many ball winners in the quarters that followed – best reflected by the fact the Pike Medal was shared three ways in red and blue.

Eaton midfielders Josh Bowe, Michael Battaglia and Gino Catalano were inseparable for the prestigious best-on-ground accolade.

After the game, Boomers’ coach Alan McDonald said the result was "surreal".

“It’s really quite weird. Obviously you’re stoked and excited. It’s quite a numbing feeling – I’ve never experienced it before,” he said.

“It’s pretty surreal. It’s unbelievable and it’s just a pleasure to be involved with such an awesome club.”

Collie was not without its stars. Paul Lindsay was tireless in the ruck, Talan Michael was a major contributor before he was red carded late in the final term and Adam Bignall booted three classy goals.

Despite winning the second half, the Eagles could not find the two-or-three quick majors they needed to get back in the game.

Jace Cormack was everywhere for the Boomers in the opening two terms and had three goals to his name before half-time.

Eaton’s Jacob Ferrier was well held by Luke Motion, and finished the game with 2.5.

The Boomers defeated South Bunbury in the colts decider 11.14 (80) to 10.9 (69).

In the reserves grand final, Collie held on to beat Eaton 9.3 (57) to 6.13 (49).
