Enable WA kept the fire burning during NAIDOC Week earlier this month, with a range of themed activities and education sessions to celebrate.

The organisation has been working on a reconciliation action plan to promote inclusivity, with the goal of making its space as culturally safe and welcoming as possible for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.

Plan chair Sara Mason organised a week of events alongside Enable WA’s Jenna Bigg, Keipa Boodja Aboriginal Corporation’s Aunty Annette Garlett, and Studio42’s Lauren Dixon.

On Monday July 8 there was a morning tea with original artwork for the office unveiled, while the next day there was an online scavenger hunt, with points awarded for photographing items around Bunbury related to Indigenous culture.

Other events during the week included short stories and Dreaming movies being played in Enable’s boardroom, which was converted into a theatre featuring popcorn and beanbags.

Friday July 12 was the highlight of the week with a silent disco featuring music by Indigenous artists.

Ms Mason said the week’s celebrations were important for both staff and clients.

“Enable WA chose to host activities during NAIDOC Week to honour and celebrate the rich cultural heritage, resilience and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” she said.

“By embracing this year’s theme of ‘Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud’, we aim to promote cultural continuity, community pride, and a deeper understanding of Aboriginal history.”
