Festival celebrates Indian culture, food

South Western Times

Tickets for this year's Diwali Festival in Bunbury are expected to sell out well in advance.

The popular social event will be held at the South West Italian Club on November 1.

It is expected to be one of the biggest Diwali celebrations in regional Australia.

The event, organised by the South West Italian Group, will feature a mixture of traditional Indian classical music and Bollywood and Bhangra music.

South West Indian Group president Dr Parthasarathy Ramesh said the last two Diwali events had sold out days in advance.

He said professional performers from Perth would perform at the event.

Diwali, known as the festival of lights, is celebrated by Indians across the world.

Dr Ramesh said Dawali had previously been a Hindu festival celebrating the harvest but it now was a non-religious celebration.

"It is an Indian festival which celebrates the victory of good over evil and the light over the darkness," he said.

“It started as a harvest festival in India in the autumn months but it then became a global festival.”

Guests for the event include Multicultural Interest Minister Mike Nahan and it is supported by the Bunbury City Council.

Tickets will include an Indian buffet catered by Spice Journey.
