A fire has caused authorities to close Forrest Highway in both directions near Treendale.

Police say a property owner was conducting a controlled burn this afternoon, before he lost control of the fire.

Australind police officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Mark Smith says smoke is causing a problem in the area.

“It’s not a large fire, it’s just a large amount of smoke,” he said.

People travelling north are being diverted onto Old Coast Road and those travelling south are being redirected to South Western Highway.

Police, volunteer and career firefighters and Main Roads officers are at the fire which has been contained.

Sen. Sgt Smith said drivers in the area needed to slow down.
