Residents near Australind Road and Crimp Crescent in Leschenault have been warned to leave their home now if they are not prepared to actively defend it as a fast-moving and unpredictable fire burns in the area.

Old Coast Road has been closed as the fire burns north towards Forrest Highway.A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman advised people leaving the area to use Cathedral Avenue.

Sgt Chris Clelland from Australind Police said the fire may have been caused by a discarded cigarette butt.

A motorist reported the fire just before 11am.
