Floral creations transform Bunbury gallery

South Western Times

Floral artists will convert the Chapel Gallery into a living, breathing kaleidoscope of colour and scent when the annual Blooming Art exhibition returns to the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries next week.

Flower Designers Club of Bunbury and BRAG will welcome spring to the city with the popular event which showcases some of the latest floral techniques from around the world.

Visitors will enjoy floor designs, Grow and Show arrangements, Beauty from the Balcony and botanical jewellery.

The contemporary floral design section has attracted artists from overseas and interstate to share contemporary techniques and styles.

Qualified floral art judges will travel from Perth to assess the competition.

The Flower Designers Club of Bunbury’s central exhibit for 2013 will take the form of a big table setting and this year’s exhibition will include a new section with floral designers testing their craft skill by making a series of chairs out of plant material.

Floral artists, such as amateur Pina Versace, will also create floral arrangements which interpret selected artworks from the Bunbury City Art Collection.

“I’ve chosen to interpret a Brian McKay painting called Ho Voto Liberale which translates literally to ‘I vote Liberal’, ” she said.

“The title of the work is obviously very topical at the moment but I also chose this particular painting because Brian McKay is a West Australian and I liked that it is entirely in black and white.

“I really enjoy this section of the Blooming Arts exhibition because you get to see a great artwork that the city has acquired but also someone else’s interpretation of that work which is always interesting.”

The exhibition opens on September 19 and runs until September 22.

Bunbury Regional Art Galleries are open 10am-7pm Thursday and 10am-4pm every other day. Entry is free.
