Football: Buchanan butters up for Boomers

Gun forward Matt Buchanan is set to return to the SWFL, further bolstering the unbeaten Eaton Boomers squad.

Buchanan could line up for the Boomers as soon as their next game against Carey Park on May 19.

The former Boomers captain relocated to Melbourne over the summer to play for St Bernard Football Club in the A Grade Amateur League but is expected back at Glen Huon Reserve shortly.

The addition will soften the blow of losing key recruit Kane Bloxsidge to a long-term knee injury.

Buchanan said he was excited about returning to the club where he won the 2008 best and fairest.

“I’ve been at the club for a long time and it’s in a strong position to do something they’ve never done before which is win a league flag,” he said.

“They have started great this year and look a more complete side.

“Hopefully I can find a spot and keep it.”

The classy forward kicked 73 goals over the past two SWFL seasons and would add another element to a forward line that already includes crack recruit Leigh Kelly.

Buchanan said playing in Melbourne had been a good experience.

“It was a stronger competition than the SWFL but a completely different style of football with smaller grounds and more contested football,” he said.

Eaton Boomers coach Alan McDonald was always optimistic that Buchanan might return sometime during the 2013 season.

“There’s always the possibility that guys like Butters (Buchanan) might return,” McDonald said in the South Western Times SWFL season preview magazine.
