Football: South West kick off Landmark with win
The South West has made a winning start to its 2013 Landmark Country Football Championships campaign, defeating Mortlock by 29 points in their opening game today.
In the first of two shortened contests at East Fremantle Oval, the South West were comfortable victors in the drizzle, 8.5 (53) to 4.0 (24).
Leading by 15 points at the long break, goals to Kris Clarkson and Tim Noakes broke the game open early in the second half.
Noakes finished the game with three majors and was in everything in the second half.
Donnybrook's Jeff Smith was a dominant force at the centre bounces while Eaton Boomer Matt Scott took several telling marks in defence.
Travis Obal started the game on the bench but came on midway through the first half and found plenty of the ball.
Guy Piggott's two first half were telling for the South West, who jumped to an early advantage.
Leigh Kohlmann presented well for the South West and both kicked two goals and Donnybrook's Hayden King was a force at the stoppages.
For Mortlock, Leigh McCallum worked hard in the midfield while big man Andrew Ruck was a tower of strength at the stoppages.
The South West's second game will be against the Lower South West.
