South West Traffic officers nabbed only four drink drivers from 3000 random breath tests over the holiday period.

South West Traffic coordinator Sgt Dave Hurdle was pleased with the result but was still concerned with the number of people driving without a licence.

The officers were part of Operation Crossroads — a police road safety campaign run from December 20 to January 5.

South West Traffic, which conducted most of the operation in the region, seized eight cars and charged 49 people for driving without a licence.

They issued 280 fines – 218 people were caught speeding and 15 were driving without a seatbelt.

“The number of people without a licence is always a concern, ” Sgt Hurdle said.

However, more drivers across the region were checked over the holiday period as individual police stations ran separate operations.

More than 3.38 million drivers across the State were monitored by WA police during Operation Crossroads.

Police laid 389 drink driving charges, impounded 405 vehicles and handed out 2323 traffic fines.

The majority of offences from the operation were for speeding with more than 18,000 people caught by officers or on cameras.

Acting Assistant Commissioner of traffic and emergency response Alf Fordham said “effectively” each driver in the State was checked more than twice during the operation.
