From punk to rock ... and owning it

If I said I listened to U2 would you hold it against me?

As odd as it may sound, punk rockers do care about song writing development and despite what some people might think, Juwana guitarist Adam McGill insists one can enjoy the musical stylings of Bono and call yourself a punk rocker.

‘‘Yes, we listen to U2,’’McGill said.

‘‘But there’s a lot more to us than that, you know.’’

Indeed, after three years together the band will release their second EP, Back to the 440 on Saturday at the Prince of Wales Hotel— and McGill says the band’s sound is maturing.

‘‘Our sound has evolved somewhat since we released our first EP,’’ he said.

‘‘Back then, it was kind of punk, but now it’s a bit more rock ’n’ roll.’’

McGill says scoring a spot at last year’s Groovin the Moo was a coup for the band.

‘‘It was great,’’McGill said.

‘‘An awesome experience for us as a group.’’

Juwana have been playing shows across the South West over the past month, as part of the EP launch— but they have saved the best until last, finishing the tour in Bunbury.

Fans of the band, and those who own and love the first EP, will note the songs are more intricate, a quality McGill credits to listening to the likes of Muse, Gyroscope, Children Collide and, of course, U2.

If you also enjoy U2, don’t be ashamed, stand up and be proud — own it,man.

One day they too may tour B-town.

Until then, you could try home-grown act Juwana.

Back to the 440 launches at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Bunbury this Saturday night, supported by Sonny Black and Victory Risk.

Entry is free.
