Gardie's Mates are about to begin their sixth year of charity work and are gearing up for one of their biggest fundraisers of the year, the Forever Young Race Day.

The charity organisation, founded by friends of Troy Gard in his honour, holds the special function each year, with this year’s event being held at the Bunbury Turf Club on Sunday, December 28.

They will once again aim to raise money for a South West family in need, after previously helping the Scott, Halkyard, Robinson and most recently the Davies families.

This year’s Forever Young Race Day tickets will include entrance into the races and race book, entry into the Big Top Marquee with television screens, tote and bar facilities, as well as raffles and other fundraising exercises.

A bus will then take people from the races to the Bunbury Surf Life Saving Club for an after party.

Previous projects by Gardie’s Mates include renovations to houses, donations of toys and gifts as well as money.

In 2013 Gardie’s Mates helped the Robinson family, as young Kayla was battling cancer.

Gardie’s Mates renovated and repaired water damage to the bedrooms in their house, recovered the flooring, repainted the rooms and fitted new robes all through donations, as well as helped with her wish for a four-wheeled-motorbike.

The charity group organises a number of fundraisers throughout the year including its annual Gardstock concert as well as the race day.

Last year’s winner of the main race, the $25,000 Troy Gard Memorial, was Perth-based mare Saxon’s Patch.

Gardie’s Mate Jeff Hayres said the event sold out each year so people should get tickets quickly.

They are available from Gard Realty, Hiscox Partners or at the Gardie’s Mates’ Facebook and website, with all the money from the event going to the Gardie’s Mates charity.
