Gessner in front start to finish
Cameron Gessner took full advantage of a front-row start to claim round three of the 2016-17 AHG Sprintcar Series at Quit Bunbury Speedway on Saturday night.
Myalup’s Brad Maiolo finished second in the night’s feature race with Ben Ellement rounding off the podium finishers.
Gessner started on the outside of the front row with Maiolo and shot to the lead on the first corner, never looking back for the 25-lap journey.
The feature race only reached the first corner before an incident when Scott Chatwin went wide, tagged the fence and went over, forcing a full re-start.
Chatwin said afterwards he was not sure what caused the crash and the team was still assessing the damage after the show had ended.
Andrew Priolo spun in the pits bend on lap 11, bunching the field back up.
On the re-start, Jason Kendrick, who started from P5 and had dropped to sixth, was the big mover.
He won the battle with Jamie Maiolo and then replaced Callum Williamson in fourth a few laps later.
Unfortunately it counted for little with Kendrick parking the car on the infield on lap 17 in a tough night for the team after they were forced to change an engine after qualifying.
Brad Maiolo looked strong with a handful of laps remaining but was unable to get enough momentum to slide under Gessner who held his nerve to take the win.
Maiolo’s brother Jamie finished the race in 10th.
It was a good night for Gessner who set a quick time at the start of the show and won his first heat race.
Other heat race wins went to Brad Maiolo, Kendrick and Andrew Priolo.
