‘Girl Asleep’ snaps up CinefestOZ prize
Australia’s biggest film festival prize was awarded last weekend, with Rosemary Myers coming-of-age tale walking away with the coveted $100,000 crown.
The South Australian filmGirl Asleep beat out fellow finalistsThe Death and Life of Otto Bloom ,Spin Out andJasper Jones , to be presented the CinefestOZ Film Prize at Saturday’s Gala event in Busselton.
Producer Jo Dyer was on hand to accept the award, saying “It’s been a wonderful ride from Berlin to Busselton, but this has been the most fun yet.”
The film was declared the unanimous winner after being judged by a team of four industry officials, after West Australian actress Emma Booth had to pull-out last minute citing critical family matters.
Jury Chair Gillian Armstrong was also awarded the 2016 Screen legend award for her outstanding achievements as one of Australia’s most successful and respected filmmakers.
On Friday Ben Elton joined fans in Bunbury for a special red carpet screening of his new historical comedyUpstart Crow , with audiences treated to two episodes of the Shakespearean sitcom.
“I feel incredibly proud to be a part of CinefestOZ, ” Mr Elton said.
“It is really special, the fact that local communities come together for it.”
The West Australian State Government has secured a new deal to support the event for another two years.
