It was a day of close wins and near misses on yesterday at the Bunbury Turf Club, as jockeys, horses and spectators alike braved overcast conditions for a big day of racing.

The headline act was the $17,000 Thinkwater Bunbury Handicap (1420m) and it was mid-card runner Goldbo who stormed home for a tight win.

The six-year-old bay mare ran second from the starting gate all the way to the turn, before powering home with jockey Randy Tan in the saddle to win by a nose ahead of Reflectance and Django.

Trainer Joe Byrne and jockey Glenn Smith would have been disappointed to have let the race slip, with Django leading from the gate to the turn, but faltering on the straight to come third.

Strong favourite Paddy’s Flat, which was ridden by champion jockey William Pike, was unable to impress, coming sixth after being as far back as ninth on the turn.

Six-year-old chestnut mare Sheez Our Holly almost did not compete after throwing jockey Jordan Turner before reaching the starting gates.

The John Cunniffe-trained mare then ran off the track and through the stables, before being returned by officials and cleared to compete, finishing 13th., as jockeys, horses and spectators alike braved overcast conditions for a big day of racing.
