Good old-fashioned celebrations

South Western Times

It will be an epic celebration in Burekup next Wednesday when the community gets into the spirit of Australia Day, offering attractions for all ages.

‘‘We’re a good old fashioned country day,’’ organising committee president Dot Squire said.

‘‘Australia Day celebrations are all based around the kids and family.’’

Free activities on the day are predicted to keep children entertained for hours as the colours of our nation are adorned with pride.

‘‘There will be a great family atmosphere with fun for all of the family, including free pony rides, face painting, a petting zoo, bouncy castles and market stalls,’’ Mrs Squire said.

More than 600 people attended the inaugural event in 2010.

There will be 27 market stalls and 14 community groups providing displays at the event.

Other highlights include vintage tractor and vintage motocross bike displays, best Australian-themed costume competitions and an art competition which asks entrants to visually depict what Australia Day means to them.

‘‘Throughout the day there will be exhibitions of freestyle roller skating and a chance for people to see and find out more about roller derby,’’ Mrs Squire said.

Event organisers said the food and drink stalls would be operating to support local community groups including the Burekup Cricket Club, Burekup Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade and River Valley Primary School.

The South Western Times sponsored event will run from 9am to 1pm at the Burekup and Districts Country Club.
