Grammar win when it counts

A team from Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School has done what no one else could do in 2016 – defeat Augusta-Margaret River.

The school’s female team won this year’s South West Youth Girls premiership 2.5 (17) to 2.4 (16) in one of the toughest games of the season.

Augusta-Margaret River had beaten the Grammar side earlier in the year by more than 10 goals and were hot favourites heading into the grand final.

Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School assistant coach Jen Leay said the girls were confident they could beat Augusta-Margaret River.

“It was very special, especially being such a close game and Margaret River being undefeated before then,” she said.

“The girls showed a lot of fighting spirit.

“The girls were so hard at the ball and there was not a lot of open area for them to run in to.”

Half back Anouk Marren, 17, was named best on ground in the grand final after a sensational performance.

“She stopped Margaret River going forward,” Leay said.

The Hawks kicked the only goal of the first quarter and despite a comeback in the second term by the Grammar girls, they still trailed at half-time by one point.

The third term was the tightest of the day, with neither team scoring, but in the last quarter Tahlia Jones kicked a goal to give Grammar back-to-back flags.
