Hard work pays off for award-winning practice

Six years of hard work has paid off for Brecken Health, after the practice was awarded the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners General Practice of the Year Award for WA earlier this month.

Brecken Health has two campuses, one in Bunbury and another in Australind, with more than 20 doctors seeing hundreds of patients each week.

Principal general practitioner and founder Brenda Murrison said she began the business in 2010 because there was a shortage of doctors in the region.

“At the time there was a terrible doctor shortage in Bunbury,” she said.

“People were waiting up to six weeks to see a doctor.

“It was an unmet demand. That is why I started the general practice.”

Mrs Murrison said the organisation was rewarded because of its service and quality teaching programs.

“Presumably the registrars have been giving good feedback over the years,” she said.

“It is a real team award. There are a lot of cogs in the wheel here. Everyone works really hard otherwise it doesn’t work well.

“It is a reward for everyone who works in this practice.”

Mrs Murrison said she was surprised to win the award.

“In fact I thought it was an error,” she said.

“So yes, it was a shock, we had no hints we were going to get the award.

“It is great to be acknowledged for your hard work and professionalism.”

Mrs Murrison said she hoped the business would continue to grow.

“I hope to grow a fair bit more, but also grow our team to be multi-skilled.”
