Hay Park book grand final spot

GEORGE GOODWINSouth Western Times

HAY Park have booked a place in this year’s LGM Industries Bunbury and Districts Cricket Association grand final, after a handy century from Mark Steven helped the Redbacks defeat Colts in the second semi-final on Saturday.

Steven scored a magnificent unbeaten 114 in the Redbacks’ 38-run win at Hay Park.

Hay Park set Colts a competitive 228 for victory, and it was the veteran Chris Waddinham who stood up with the ball, taking 3-22 from eight overs to help bundle Colts for 190.

Hero of the day Steven faced 137 balls in a three-hour stay, stroking six fours and three sixes after arriving at the crease in the third over, replacing another BDCA young gun Brendan Jones, desperately unlucky to be sent packing leg before to a Josh Topliss ball that looked high.

Chasing 238 Colts veteran opener Ian Prosser ripped into the Redbacks paceman Grant Milbanke in a merry half hour pounding five boundaries and two sixes to give his team a great start.

But with the loss of the adventurous Prosser, as well as Nick Barr, fellow opener Cruize Ciallella and skipper Murray Goodwin out for 72 things looked rocky for Colts.

James Middleton (65 runs) and Kyle Davis (45) did a repair job and put on 81 between them but when spinner Shaun Bulman broke the stand the Colts tail crashed.
