The Youth Advisory Council is looking for its newest member to tackle youth issues in Bunbury and give the city’s young residents a voice.

The group, which is a formal committee of the Bunbury City Council, has invited 12 to 25-year-olds who live in Bunbury to nominate for the sought-after position.

YAC has a long history of advising the mayor and elected members on plans, strategies and proposals affecting Bunbury’s youth.

Community development officer Silvana Garwood said while YAC was somewhat supervised by the council, the group had a strong influence and played a pivotal role.

“We’re all about a new direction which is giving them support, but they’re deciding everything,” Ms Garwood said.

“The main focus is what they want Bunbury to look like.”

One of YAC’s biggest projects at the moment is organising the 2016-17 Youth Calendar, which includes National Youth Week and the Shift Youth Festival 2017.

Ms Garwood said all the activities were chosen by YAC members.

The group will hold its Youth Reference Group Meeting next month in partnership with Headspace and will include an Amazing Race-type activity ending in a “chat” about Mental Health Week activities and future opportunities.

Application forms can be downloaded from the Bunbury City Council website.
