A year 12 Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School student has been recognised for her work in the volunteer sector by one of the region’s biggest women’s organisations.

Eliza Lyon, 17, recieved the Zonta Club of Bunbury’s 2016 Young Women in Public Affairs Award on August 16 at a presentation night at the Highway Hotel.

The award is presented to a young woman aged between 16 and 20 who has a commitment to the volunteer sector, shows evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and is dedicated to empowering women worldwide.

Eliza was nominated last year and was a finalist.

She said she was pleased to finally win the award.

The teenager is growing into being a leader, sitting on the Bunbury Youth Advisory Board as well as heading to a youth parliament camp earlier this year.

Eliza beat fellow finalists Emily Fernley, from Grace Christian School, Lydia Kerrell-Vaughan, from Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School and Georgia Dodds, from Bunbury Senior High School.

Award coordinator Leonie Davey said all the applicants were outstanding young women who were contributing greatly to the volunteer sector.

Eliza’s application will be forwarded for district judging.

If successful there, she will progress to the next level early next year when 10 young women, from anywhere in the world, will be selected to receive international awards.
