Respect and identity through hip-hop was taught at Djidi Djidi Aboriginal School last week.

Melbourne-based group Indigenous Hip Hop Projects visited Bunbury for the third time in the past year, using dance and song to pass on messages.“It’s about sending messages through the arts about strong a mind, body, spirit and culture and respect around that,” the group’s co-director Michael Farah said.

“We’re trying to get through to young people that they’re responsible for that, nobody else.

“Our work has strong messages around drugs, alcohol, violence and bullying.”

The group held similar sessions in Harvey the previous week, which culminated in a concert that Mr Farah said was attended by 250 people.

The combined efforts of Bunbury and Harvey students has resulted in a song being written and recorded, which will be used at the school and promoted through social media.

Mr Farah said South West Aboriginal Medical Service, who helped bring the group to Bunbury, wanted to push leadership messages.

“If we can get young people to focus on respecting themselves, everything else will get sorted,” he said.

“The biggest breakthrough is when they let go of shame, because it doesn’t matter about skin colour, age or size.

“We’re also teaching numeracy and literacy outcomes because we’re counting the whole time in dance and writing poetry really.”

Djidi Djidi principal Justin Grasso said students could gain a lot out of the program.

“It’s basically to provide another opportunity for kids to grow, discover themselves and build both essential life skills for when they leave primary school and also develop a broader world perspective,” he said.
