Homeless man smashes hospital

Usman Azad, SOUTH WESTERN TIMESSouth Western Times

A homeless man yesterday smashed the glass sliding doors at Bunbury Hospital because he believed he was not treated properly.

Calvin Rhys Embling later described the incident to police, when he kicked and used his backpack to smash the doors, as an “eye for eye”.

This was revealed as Embling was fined $579 in the Bunbury Magistrate’s Court for criminal damage and possession of a smoking implement.

Police prosecutor Sgt Brian McCormack said Embling had been treated overnight in hospital but was angry at this treatment after he was discharged.

Embling was also angry because he could not complain to a hospital staff member but instead was given a form to fill in.

He was later arrested and told officers during an interview: “It was an eye for an eye. They let me go worse than when I went in so I figured they owed me.”

Duty lawyer Jeanette de Klerk said Embling admitted the offence but denied telling police the hospital “owed him”.

She said Embling was remorseful for the offence and the incident was out of character.
