Hospital chefs kick off long lunch
Tristen Rhodes has gone from cooking in a moving kitchen to catering for hundreds of patients at Bunbury's St John of God Hospital.
As a chef on cruise ship True North, Mr Rhodes is used to preparing noteworthy meals, now working in the hospital's kitchen he serves up hundreds of meals every day to patients.
The chef will combine both these skills when he joins the team of chefs that will feed the hundreds of people attending next month's Chefs' Long Table Lunch.
Mr Rhodes will be joined by other St John of God Hospital chefs who will make a prawn starter for the lunch.
Skewered prawns will be cooked on the barbecue and topped with aioli and a herb crust called gremolata, Mr Rhodes said.
February's lunch will be Mr Rhodes' sixth time volunteering at the event.
He said the atmosphere and fun were two things that brought him back year after year.
"It's a nice day and it's good to have the chefs all get together," he said.
"When we finish our dish we'll help out the other chefs."
Mr Rhodes cooked at the lunch in its early years and had watched it grow.
"It sort of feels like we're doing Telethon and helping raise money and support a good cause," he said.
Mr Rhodes said volunteering at the event was supported by the hospital's management.
"It works really well with St John's because we're all about compassion," Mr Rhodes said.
