Inspiring beacon of hope
The spire of Bunbury’s new multi-million dollar Catholic cathedral is to be illuminated at night, similar to Perth’s Bell Tower.
Touring the the cathedral on Monday as the completion date for Bunbury’s newest icon approaches, Bishop Gerard Holohan explained the inspiration behind the design.
‘‘Going down into Bunbury at 4am Saturday or Sunday morning, there are lots of signs of people anesthetising themselves against the problems of life,’’ Bishop Holohan said.
‘‘The beacon of light will be a reminder that there is another way, there is an alternative to a world where people are not at peace within.’’
The crowning jewel of Bunbury’s new Catholic cathedral took its place above the city late last month and unlike the building itself, the spire’s cross faces Bunbury’s centre.
Bishop Holohan said it was important for the cathedral to welcome all, even if they were just searching for peace and quiet and the cross faced the central business district for that reason.
‘‘The cross is a sign of God’s love and reminds of God’s presence — people may not have an interest in God, but if ever they do need to, it will be clear to them that they can come here,’’ Bishop Holohan said.
Bishops from around the State will attend a consecration ceremony in March next year to bless the 3000sqm cathedral, designed by award-winning Australian architect Marcus Collins.
