Bunbury Primary School was the only primary school in WA to win commendations in the Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Competition this year.

Year 5 students Amelia Oddy and Tiffany Jones entered their poems in the competition and received commendations in the schools’ award category.

Principal Franca Dillon said the competition provided students with writing opportunities to support the school curriculum.

She said students expressed their emotions through writing poems about topics that inspired them.

“Students get the chance to use their literary strengths and express their passion about a topic,” Ms Dillon said.

“It provides an opportunity to get feedback from a wider audience about their writing outside the school environment.

It’s an opportunity to test their ideas and audience response.”

Amelia told a story about Anzac Day from the perspective of a solider.

“My poem told a story about the feeling of being a soldier and what they were doing as soldiers,” Amelia said.

“I have enjoyed learning about the different styles of poetry and learning different ways of connecting words.”

Tiffany said she wanted to write a funny poem and she was motivated by her love of puppies as well as eating sausages.

“The puppy was trying to attack the sausage because it was hot,” Tiffany said.

“It was funny and I enjoyed writing it.

“We learn about different styles of writing in class and the different poem structures which helped me write this poem.”
